This young Green Woodpecker arrived exhausted from the heat and was brought in by a Mr Woods (Woody) who found him
laying in his garden, he can fly short distances but is so weak that he cannot sustain flight for longer than a minute. He has been climbing tonight and looking a lot more like a woodpecker. We have given him plenty of water and food in his run, so that we have to disturb him as little as possible. He will need to drink a lot to get over the dehydration.
This weather is taking it's toll on our beautiful wildlife so please make sure you put shallow dishes of water out in your garden. It will save many lives. Make sure to clean your water regularly, as dirty water can harbour many diseases which will transfer to the animals that drink it.
This young boy was with us for a good few weeks before he started to fly properly again. We kept him for a little bit longer after this just to make sure he was flying perfectly and he didn't start to go downhill.
He was released back to where he came from as Mr Woods told us that there were lots of others there and he will find his group.
