Woodpecker: Mace & Larch
We don't tend to see many Woodpeckers here in the rescue. This is little Mace and Larch and they are both fledgling Great
Spotted Woodpeckers. Mace came in after being found wandering on the ground by himself! Larch was being attached by a mob of Jays and thankfully someone saw and took him away to safety. He has a few war wounds across his head and neck but otherwise is doing well.
Unfortunately, it comes with the territory and naturally the bigger birds will prey on the smaller. Usually, they have mum nearby to keep an eye on them and make sure they do not run into trouble but in this instance, this wasn't the case.
They are very shy birds and don't do well in captivity at all. They get very panicky and go into shock really easily so it is vital we keep away as much as possible. It is great that we have 2 together so they can keep each other company and perhaps not feel so stressed while in our care.
Mace & Larch were both released on site here as we have lots of woodpeckers already calling it home. They went into a small aviary first before their final release too.
